How to optimize your site for SEO?

Jul 18, 2019 | Tech

You have a website, and you want to make sure people can find you on Google. Then you need to know about SEO. Let’s dive in!

What is SEO?

SEO means Search Engine Optimization, which helps search engines, like Google to list your website when someone is searching for relevant terms/keywords. Aka, if you’re a florist in San Francisco, and someone searches for “florist San Francisco” in Google, you likely want to be found there, so potential customers can reach your site.

Below you can read about some tips how you can improve your website’s ranking organically.

Host your Own Website/Blog

Meaning having your own server, and owning your domain, gives you a credit in Google’s opinion. And to be honest, if you’re slightly serious about your business, you don’t want to use a Blogger or Tumblr domain anyways.

Write Unique Content

Initially Google wants to provide relevant informations for users. Therefore you want to write about something that solves a problem.

Just imagine your target audience, and what they would search for on Google. Giving a unique content will more likely position you on a better place in the search results. And the chances are higher that other websites will link to your helpful article. So win-win!

Use Keywords

Write for your target market first, then make sure you have some relevant keywords in your article. Don’t insert too much, as keyword stuffing can’t be penalized by search engines.

Relevant Title Tags and Meta Descriptions

These two are used in search engine results, and are quite important. Title tags should be 50-60 characters, and should include a keyword. In the meta description you want to give a brief description of your content. What’s crucial here, is that the length should be between 150-160 characters, and you’d want to include a call-to-action, so you encourage people to click on your article. We recommend Yoast for WordPress.

Use Subheadings

In general you want to show your information with subheadings, so the text is easy to read, people can scan through it without a problem.

H1: That’s the title of your article. WordPress automatically assigns that header to it.

H2: Your main topics in your article.

H3-H6: Additional sub-heading in your article.

Internal Linking

You can link keywords to relevant articles/pages on your site. That can boost engagement and SEO. But make sure you don’t just link something for the sake of linking.

Optimize Links

Make sure you have SEO friendly permalinks! You can do that by going to Settings/ and select the post name URL stucture. You can also edit the link name by inserting relevant keywords separated by dashes.

Optimize Images

Relevant imagery deffinitely helps with engagement. Add at least a featured image to your article, and make sure that image is optimized. Has the right size, and added ALT image text, describing your image in a short and meaningful way.

Let’s wrap it up!

Even though this article can help improving your SEO, it still does not state all the important steps you need to take. We always suggest to find a professional to make sure your business website is using best practices, and has the right amount of SEO juice.
